Patients with dental pain, uncertain pulpal or periapical diagnoses, or symptoms where the source is difficult to identify can be referred for focused endodontic assessment.

Previously treated teeth presenting with persistent symptoms, recurrent infection, or apical disaease can be assessed to determine whether non-surgical retreatment is appropriate.

Patients can be referred for a second opinion regarding proposed root canal treatment, the prognosis of previously treated teeth, or whether a tooth may reasonably be preserved.

Patients presenting with acute dental pain or symptoms of pulpal or periapical disease can be referred for prompt assessment and appropriate management.

Complex Endodontic Cases

Teeth where challenging anatomy, calcified canals, difficult access, or other complicating factors are welcome for assessment and treatment.

We contact the patient

Our team will contact the patient to arrange an appointment for assessment and treatment where appropriate.

Assessment & Treatment

The patient is assessed and the diagnosis, treatment options, and prognosis are discussed before proceeding with endodontic treatment.

Back to your care

Following treatment, relevant clinical information and radiographs are communicated to you and the patient is returned to your practice for definitive restoration and ongoing care.

Can I refer patients for assessment only?

Yes. Patients are welcome for endodontic assessment, diagnosis, or a second opinion without committing to treatment. Findings and treatment options can be communicated back to the referring dentist where appropriate.

Will my patient be returned to my practice?

Yes. Patients referred to BEC are seen for the endodontic problem for which they were referred. Following completion of treatment, they are returned to the referring dentist for definitive restoration and ongoing dental care.

Can I refer a patient with a seperated instrument or procedural complication?

Yes. These cases can be assessed individually to determine the nature of the complication, its effect on prognosis, and the available treatment options.

Do you accept retreatment cases with posts or existing restorations?

Yes. Previously treated teeth with posts, crowns, or other restorations can be assessed for the feasibility of nonsurgical retreatment. Treatment recommendations will depend on restorability, access, and the individual prognosis of the tooth.

Can I refer an emergency patient?

Yes, subject to appointment availability. Please contact the practice directly for patients experiencing acute pain or swelling so that we can determine how soon they can be accommodated.

Why should I refer my patient to you?

Bryanston Endodontic Centre provides a focused service for dentists who would prefer to refer endodontic treatment. Our emphasis is on careful diagnosis, evidence-based treatment, clear communication with the referring practitioner, and preservation of the natural tooth wherever appropriate.

Patients referred to the centre remain under the care of their referring dentist and are returned for definitive restoration and ongoing dental care.

Is Dr Hayden Barnard an endodontist?

Dr Hayden Barnard is an HPCSA-registered dentist with a particular clinical interest in endodonitcs. He is not registered as a dental specialist. Endodontics is not currently a seperately registrable dental specialty with the HPCSA. BEC has been established as a focused endodontic service within Dr Barnard's scope.

What experience does Dr Barnard have in endodontics?

Endodontics forms a significant part of Dr Barnard's clinical practice and professional development. He regularly performs primary root canal treatment, manages more complex endodontic cases, and undertakes nonsurgical retreatment where appropriate. He continues to develop his endodontic training through focused continuing professional development and hands-on education.

What happens if a case is beyond the scope of the centre?

Careful case selection forms an important part of endodonitc treatment. If assessment identifies a case that would be more appropriately manageed by another practitioner or requires treatment outside the scope of BEC, this will be discussed openly with the patient and referring dentist, and an appropriate onward referral recommended.
